Attendance Matters graphic for the Bearcat Beat

In a recent episode of The Bearcat Beat, host Amy Zock, Director of Instructional and Innovative Technology for Decatur County Schools, sat down with a powerhouse panel of district experts to discuss a simple habit with massive returns: regular school attendance.

Joined by Dr. Cynthia Gardner (Parent and Family Engagement Director) and District Social Workers Tia Williams and Recarlos Williams, the group unpacked how missing just two days a month can alter a child’s future.

The Math of Missing Out

The numbers are startling. Dr. Gardner pointed out that chronic absenteeism—often defined as missing 10% of the school year—starts much sooner than parents might realize.

"Missing just two days of school per month equates to 20 days a year," Dr. Gardner explained. "That’s 30 hours of math missed and 60 hours of reading and writing instruction. Even if you get homework to catch up, there is no way to get the same instruction as if that child was in that seat."

More Than Just Grades: Belonging and Wellbeing

While academics are critical, the panel highlighted that school provides a vital social-emotional safety net. In the wake of the pandemic, many students struggle with "attachment issues" and anxiety. The solution, according to social worker Recarlos Williams, is the stability of the classroom.

"Coming to school creates structure and predictability," said Recarlos Williams. "It connects students to a stronger support system with adults... and it builds a sense of belonging."

Tia Williams added that the school environment is where students learn the "innate skills" of human growth, such as conflict resolution and empathy. "That’s the summation of school," she noted. "Being a part of a group and being a part of your community."

Preparing for the Day Ahead

The habits built in Decatur County classrooms are the same ones local employers are looking for. Amy Zock noted that "employability habits" are a top priority for the district.

Dr. Gardner echoed this: "As an employer, you're looking for someone that's going to come to work every day... someone that is able to communicate. We look to employ our students that are here."

Tips for a Stress-Free Morning

The team offered practical "pro-tips" for families struggling to get out the door:

  • The 5-to-9 Rule: Treat the evening hours as "prime time" to prepare clothes, backpacks, and checklists.

  • The Morning Starts the Night Before: Minimize decision-making in the AM to reduce stress.

  • Tech Recharging: Amy Zock recommends charging devices outside of the bedroom to protect student sleep.

  • On-Time for Breakfast: Remember that every student in Decatur County gets free breakfast, but they must be on time to fuel their brains for the day.

We Are on Your Team

The message from the district is clear: the schools are here to help, not just to send letters. If your family is facing barriers—whether medical, financial, or emotional—reach out to your school's guidance counselor or social worker.

As Amy Zock concluded, "We really are all on the same team... consistent attendance and punctuality are simple habits with outsized returns."
