"Our species needs, and deserves, a citizenry with minds wide awake and a basic understanding of how the world works"
-Carl Sagan
The BHS science department strives to offer a quality science education to all of our students in a time when understanding of science and separating fact from fiction have never been more important in our nation.
We offer courses approved by the State of Georgia and following the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for students to explore and expand their understanding of science.
Georgia requires a minimum of 4 science credits to graduate. One of the credits must be in biology and one must be a physics credit. Generally, physical science is taken during the 9th grade year, and biology is taken during the 10th grade. In 11th grade, students may choose to take chemistry, environmental science, or earth systems. If students choose to take chemistry, they receive "rigor" credit which counts toward qualifying for the HOPE scholarship. The 4th science can be any elective science approved by the State of Georgia as a science credit. AP classes and college courses may also count as science credits.
